Are you looking for the best restaurants in Tulum? You’ve come to the right place!

As I keep going back to Tulum and trying different restaurants, but also thanks to the feedback from my local friends, I’ve compiled this list of the 31 best restaurants in Tulum.

When it comes to dietary choices in Tulum, you’ll have no shortage of options. Every year, the town receives thousands of tourists from all over the world.

And to host people from such diverse backgrounds, many restaurants have popped up in a relatively short amount of time, with new ones opening every single week.

So difficult to keep up, trust me!

The 31 Best Restaurants In Tulum That You Must Try (1)

With so many new options, it’s hard for a person to decide which places are the best ones. Not to mention that no single restaurant will be the best for everyone.

There’s a lot that goes into a restaurant besides just the food; people have their own tastes regarding preferred cuisines, vibes, creativity in presenting the food, and more.

I’ve faced that dilemma too, which is why I decided to compile a list of the best restaurants in Tulum. Now you won’t have to go through trial and error to discover the best food when you visit here.

In order to make the post easier to read, I’ve divided the restaurants into several categories based on which area they’re located.

The 31 Best Restaurants In Tulum That You Must Try (2)

Disclaimer: Please keep in mind that this list is intended as just a suggestion. Even though I visit Tulum at least twice a year, it’s impossible to keep up when there are several new restaurants opening every week.

That’s why this list is far from comprehensive. Feel free to branch out and try restaurants that are not mentioned on this list.

Do let me know of your experiences with any new places you try, and I might feature your suggestions in the future.

Having said that, rest assured that these below restaurants have been tested multiple times or at least once, and they are awesome options!

Do I need travel insurance in Mexico? Yes, you do! I can never stress enough what a lifesaver it can be in unexpected situations. Although I hope I never need it, it gives me peace of mind to know that whatever happens, I am covered. I have been using Safety Wing, and I find it quite fair, covering a lot for its pricing level. Depending on your needs or you can compare different insurance companies on this useful site, TRAVEL INSURANCE MASTER. Make sure you read carefully what’s included before making the purchase. If you are undecided yet, you can read my post on the best travel insurance for Mexico for more clarity.

Restaurants in Tulum Beach Zone

1. Hartwood Tulum

Hartwood restaurant is one of the most highly-rated restaurants in Tulum and is considered by many to be among the best.

The only shortcoming about this restaurant is that they don’t take reservations, so you’ll have to join the waiting line outside before you can be seated.

But don’t let that discourage you from trying the food here. You only need to take one look at their reviews to know that this place is worth the wait.

People love Hartwood Tulum for its generous servings, delicious food, amazing presentation, and the typical Tulum Boho style.

Address – Carr. Tulum-Boca Paila 7-6Km, Tulum Beach, 77780 Tulum, Q.R., Mexico

2. Casa Banana Tulum

While this restaurant is famous as an Argentinian steakhouse, they do have a very diverse menu with vegetarian and gluten-free options.

Casa Banana is similar to my previous recommendation in the sense that it doesn’t have reservations.

Though you can easily avoid waiting in a line by doing what I usually do; go before 7:30 PM, especially in high season, and you’ll get in very quickly.

3. Cenzontle Tulum

Cenzontle is a lovely restaurant with an intimate vibe. This is one of the places you’ll want to try if you’re going out with that special someone.

The quaint, candle-lit setting in the garden combined with excellent music and delicious food provides a wonderful experience.

And they do accept reservations. So no more waiting in lines!

4. Casa Jaguar Tulum

The 31 Best Restaurants In Tulum That You Must Try (4)

Casa Jaguar is famous for its amazing boho-chic ambiance.

The dining area is spread over a garden and there are palm trees all over the place, giving the impression that you’re dining out surrounded by nature.

The candles really add to the intimate and cozy feeling of the place.

The menu here is quite creative, with both meat and vegetarian options available. If you go for wood-fired fish, you can watch them being cooked right before they’re served.

They also host very fun parties every Thursday night.

Address KM 7.5, Av. Boca Paila, 77760 Tulum, Q.R., Mexico

5. Posada Margherita Tulum

Posada Margherita is situated right on the Tulum beach. This is easily one of the best Italian places you can try in Tulum, with authentic Mediterranean cuisine and fresh food.

The rustic and quiet atmosphere is enhanced by the candles in and around the restaurant and going all the way to the beach.

During the day, you can lounge under one of the cute beach huts and enjoy a cold drink or an ice cream, then get into the restaurant in the evening for an intimate candle-lit dinner.

Address Km 4.5 Carretera Tulum Boca Paila, 77760 Tulum, Q.R., Mexico

6. Arca Tulum

The 31 Best Restaurants In Tulum That You Must Try (5)

This restaurant is famous for its delicious and spectacular food, and there’s a very good reason for that.

José Luis Hinostroza Arca, the internationally renowned chef, is the co-owner of this excellent restaurant.

I highly recommend going there at least once.

Address Av. Boca Paila, Tulum Beach, 77766 Tulum, Q.R., Mexico

7. Mezzanine Thai Restaurant and Bar Tulum Restaurant

The 31 Best Restaurants In Tulum That You Must Try (6)

Located on Tulum Beach, the Mezzanine offers stunning views and an even better dining experience. The Thai cuisine here is one of the best you’ll find, not just in Tulum but the whole Riviera Maya.

While you can go here at any time of the day, the best choice (in my humble opinion) would be to visit for an early dinner.

The sunset turns the already stunning setting into something magical.

8. Wild Tulum

The 31 Best Restaurants In Tulum That You Must Try (7)
The 31 Best Restaurants In Tulum That You Must Try (8)

Suitable both for romantic, intimate dinners and fun parties with friends/family, Wild is one of Tulum’s top high-end restaurants (and one I heartily recommend).

The restaurant is rather unique in the sense that it only opens for dinner. But it’s probably one of the best dinners you’ll have anywhere.

The co*cktails and meals are simply excellent and, according to some reviewers, the best in Tulum. Every dish here can easily rival a Michelin-star restaurant’s offering.

The jungle-chic setting is perfectly mixed with the soft music, and it’s one of the few restaurants that provide you with an unforgettable experience combining all your senses.

Make sure you try their creative and delicious co*cktails. And, if you’re visiting with friends and family, they also have spacious areas available for events and parties.

Best Restaurants in Tulum Pueblo

9. Canova Tulum

La Veleta is a new and charming part of Tulum downtown, and Canova is one of this area’s recommended restaurants on my list.

The atmosphere of Canova is pretty chill and comfy, and you will find mouthwatering vegan dishes on the menu to choose from.

Apart from the vegan options, the restaurant is also known for its amazing Italian cuisine.

So, if you find yourself in the mood for some delicious pizza in a very laid-back and chic restaurant, Canova is definitely the place for it.

Address C. 7 Sur S/N, La Veleta, 77760 Tulum, Q.R., Mexico

Ph. +52 (984) 146 6329

10. Safari Tulum

Located in the exclusive area of Tulum Downtown, Aldea Zama, Safari is the go-to taqueria for me.

The peaceful and relaxed vibe of this place is just so good with its wooden furnishings and natural surroundings.

And, on top of these charming qualities are its fish tacos—they’re simply the best!

Safari also serves a very delicious breakfast and lunch, with lots of healthy foods and refreshing juices on the menu, and it’s one of the best places for Mexican cuisine if you’re in the mood for some local food in an idyllic restaurant.

Address Calle itzamna, Aldea Zama MANZANA 26-LOTE 13, 77760 Tulum, Q.R., Mexico

11. El Asadero

(not to mix up with Asadero La Palapa, which I don’t know of)

El Asadero is a dedicated Mexican restaurant in Tulum downtown where you can enjoy a delightful meal in a very informal yet laid-back atmosphere.

The restaurant is known for its meat cuts, and they really are some of the best you will find here.

If you prefer vegan, they also have a nice selection of it on their menu. I have been to it for vegan dishes more than once, and I found the service, atmosphere, and food excellent on each visit.

Just one thing to keep in mind, make a reservation if you’re going there in the evening, as it’s always packed.

Address Av. Satelite Nte. Mz 23 Lt.5 entre Sagitario y, Calle 2 Ote, Centro, 77760 Tulum, Q.R., Mexico

The 31 Best Restaurants In Tulum That You Must Try (11)

12. Cetli

Nestled in the back of Tulum downtown is Cetli. It’s a renovated hacienda restaurant with an intimate space.

There are only a few tables in Cetli, and the decor of the restaurant is another remarkable feature, so the overall atmosphere is very quaint and romantic.

You will definitely love the food served here.

Their unique combination of Mexican cuisine and international culinary techniques is well worth a try at least once if you’re in Tulum!

Address Carretera 109 Tulum Coba Km 2.5, Villas Tulum, 77760 Tulum, Q.R., Mexico

Ph. +52 (984) 108 0681

13. El Canaston

Some places have nothing but mind-blowing food to offer, and Tulum downtown has no shortage of those.

El Canaston is definitely one of those places!

On the outside, it seems like an average restaurant, but the food here is exceptional. I recommend hitting it up for delicious Mexican cuisine and extraordinary tacos.

15. Burrito Amor

The 31 Best Restaurants In Tulum That You Must Try (13)

A very popular restaurant both for lunch and dinner specialized in burritos of all kinds, including vegan and vegetarian versions and gluten-free.

You can either stay in if you find space or take your meal away. The atmosphere is very friendly but because of its popularity, it’s always very busy.

It’s located on the main street at the end of Tulum Down Town heading towards Chetumal.

Address Av. Tulum Mz 05-Lote 03, Tulum Centro, Centro, 77760 Tulum, Q.R., Mexico

Ph. +52 (984) 160 2989

16. Mestixa

This upscale and delicious restaurant in downtown Tulum offers sophisticated dishes made with a creative combination of ingredients.

Vegan options are also available, although it’s really not their forte.

Address Av satélite Entre Av. Tulum, Calle Polar Pte. y, 77760 Tulum, Q.R., Mexico

Ph. +52 (984) 182 7283

17. Asian Bodega

If you love Thai cuisine, Asian Bodega is for you. I had it as a takeaway, and I loved it. The restaurant itself is always very busy so make sure you have a lot of time you don’t mind waiting.

Address Plaza Paseo La Xelva, Av. Tulum MZ33 LT02, La Veleta, 77760 Tulum, Q.R., Mexico

Ph. +52 (999) 143 7706

18. Palma Central

Palma Central is the new hype in Tulum. It’s basically a court with food trucks and vendors where you can find delicious food of all sorts.

On weekends they always have live music and it gets packed, so make sure you go early if you want to spend time in the line.

If you get there by car, it’s also difficult to find parking. But make sure you don’t park on dark secondary roads as a good safety rule in Tulum.

Address Av. Kukulkan 6, Palma Central, 77760 Tulum, Q.R., Mexico

Best Cafes and Ice-Cream Shops in Tulum

19. Matcha Mama

When seeking a refreshing break from the heat in Tulum, Matcha Mama is a must-visit. You can grab an iced coffee, smoothie, or amazingly healthy bowls for breakfast!

They’re definitely one of the best in town, and you can make your way here from either downtown or the beach road for a quick bite.

Address Itzamna, Aldea Zama Mz. 12-Lt. 99, 77760 Tulum, Q.R., Mexico

20. Campanella Cremerie

In Aldea Zama, right close to the Pitted Date at the opposite corner, you will find this busy Italian coffee- shop where besides some nice pastry and a good expresso, you should try their delicious ice cream, the best in town.

And when you do, tell me if I wasn’t right! 🙂

Address Av. Itzamna en esquina, Aldea Zama, 77760 Tulum, Q.R., Mexico

Ph. +52 (984)145 1476

21. Italdo

Just like El Canaston is famous for its Mexican cuisine despite having an average look, Italdo is famous for its sweet and tasty delights.

Locals flock to it for its selection of sweet and salty bakery items, so it won’t be an exaggeration to say they’re one of the best in town.

You will find Italdo close to the Jungle Co-working space on the way leading to La Valeta Holistika.

The restaurant looks pretty ordinary, but it has outdoor seating right by the street and the setting is made doubly enjoyable once you taste their coffee and almond croissant!

22. Botanica Garden Cafe

Botanica Garden Cafe is one of my favorite places not only for a hearty breakfast or some delicious lunch but also because it’s great to hang out and spend some time kicking back and relaxing in a homey space.

The cafe is inside a lush garden near downtown and beach road, so there are plenty of plants and trees to enliven the atmosphere of Botanica Garden Cafe.

The atmosphere is so refreshing. It’s just perfect to have a cup of coffee and freshly-baked muffins here.

Also, for a small fee, you can participate in the painting classes that take place here every Sunday!

Ph. +52 (984) 214 1343

23. Liquido Y Solido (Temporarily Closed)

While I’m mentioning gorgeous cafes in Tulum, it would be remiss to leave Liquido y Solido out.

The cafe is located on the main road in Tulum downtown called Avenida Satellite, and it has a lovely courtyard seating area where you can have delicious cuisine served here.

Fresh juices and lots of vegan options are also on the menu, and the food is just as aesthetically pleasing as it is delicious. Suffice it to say that you will fall in love with this restaurant!

24. Alfonsina Coffee Shop Tulum

The 31 Best Restaurants In Tulum That You Must Try (15)

Alfonsina is a new cafe in Tulum and has become one of my favorites. Located right on a secondary road from the Tulum-Coba road, this is a cute space with delicious dishes and bakery goodies.

It’s also a great place to work, although they don’t have many outlets to recharge your laptop.

But it’s not so busy so you will easily find space.

Service is a little slow but we are not in a rush, are we?

Another cute cafe for breakfast and lunch, Kibok is located on the main road going out of town, right next to the Jungle Gym.

Just remember that it’s only open during the daytime. At night, the same place becomes a very popular Japanese restaurant that you can try out.

Ki’bok is known to be one of the best places for breakfast and lunch, but there are two restaurants in Tulum by the same name. Make sure you get to the one on the Carretera Tulum by the Jungle Gym.

26. Tierra @ Holistika

Tierra @ Holistika offers more than your regular dine-and-dash experience common with most restaurants.

The place is a new addition to the Tulum restaurants, and it’s unique for a lot of reasons, not to mention one of my favorite restaurants.

The food is definitely one of the top reasons, but you can also enjoy the holistic experiences of Tierra @ Holistika by taking the yoga classes offered here.

Or just soak in the atmospheric vibe of the restaurant nestled in a lush garden and bustling with a big crowd of digital nomads working from their laptops while having their healthy smoothy or vegan biscuits.

Sanara Hotel offers luxurious lodgings in the Tulum beach zone, but even if you’re not staying in it, the hotel also has a stunning beach restaurant worth a visit.

Address Km 8.1 Carretera Tulum – Cancún BOCA PAILA, 77760 Tulum, Q.R., Mexico

28. Nomade Hotel

Another remarkable hotel on the beach, Nomade Tulum features a restaurant with lots of vegan dishes on its menu.

The music and hip vibe of the restaurant go well with its Moroccan architecture and brightens the atmosphere.

However, just keep in mind that it’s a bit lively in Nomade Tulum’s restaurant, so if you’re in the mood for a quiet meal, I’d suggest somewhere else.

Address Carr. Tulum-Boca Paila Km 10.5, Tulum Beach, Zona hotelera, 77880 Tulum, Q.R., Mexico

29. Pasha

Pasha is a well-known restaurant in Tulum because of its unique, Mediterranean-style atmosphere and Middle Eastern cuisine.

The menu also has many options from various international cuisines, so you can choose from lots of vegan dishes.

The restaurant is run by a couple from Cyprus, and its setting and service really match the quality of the food.

The decor is pretty and charming, and there is a little garden inside Pasha to complement the minimalist design of the place.

30. The Pitted Date

The Pitted Date is a trendy vegan restaurant in the elegant area of Aldea Zama Tulum. The restaurant serves delightful breakfast and lunch, so it’s a favorite for many, of the variety of choices you will find on the menu.

Just make your way to Aldea Zama if you want to try out The Pitted Date. The restaurant has a few tables set up indoors, but the outdoor dining scene here is much better, with lots of plants and Aldea Zama’s trendy surroundings.

Nights in Tulum

The nightlife in Tulum is pretty great. In fact, it’s attractive enough to warrant some trips to specific areas of Tulum and even some for certain days of the week to make them memorable!

Though I don’t usually go out at night, I have a few suggestions if you want to do it.

Casa Jaguar and Gitano are the two main places at night in the beach zone of Tulum.

They’re open every night, but they also have dedicated nights when they have entertainment events planned after dinner.

Usually, Casa Jaguar has its entertainment nights on Thursdays and sometimes Tuesdays, while Gitano’s are on Fridays.

Then come all the weekend options.

The Papaya Playa Project is extremely popular for the party nights it throws on weekends and full-moon nights. You can also check out Habitas Tulum for movie nights and concerts.

Helpful Tips to Know Before Visiting Tulum

Restaurant Tips

I hope this list proves helpful to you in finding your favorite restaurant. In addition to recommendations, I wanted to share some important tips that you should know before visiting any restaurant in Tulum.

Please go through them below so you don’t face any inconveniences.

✔️ Most restaurants in Tulum don’t accept debit/credit cards. Make sure to carry cash when dining out.

✔️ Although restaurants will accept currencies like USD, the exchange rate they give you is very unreasonable, which is why you’ll end up paying a lot more for your meals.

Make sure you have enough cash in Pesos so you don’t end up paying more.

✔️ There are ATMs available all over the Tulum Hotel Zone, and they support withdrawals in both USD and pesos.

However, I would advise against withdrawing USD because every time you do so, the ATM will charge you a fee of US$50, which is quite steep and unreasonable.

Tulum Travel Tips

✔️ Whether you’re traveling solo or with your whole family, Tulum has plenty of options for everyone.

✔️ The best time to visit Tulum is in winter, from November to April. In these months, humidity is at its lowest throughout the year; rains are much less frequent, and even if they do happen, they pass very quickly, so you rarely need to cancel any plans; and the water temperature is absolutely perfect for swimming in.

✔️ If you’re planning to visit in the aforementioned months (November through April), you’ll have to book your accommodations and activities in advance; the sooner the better.

Those 6 months are the peak season for Tulum, and almost every place is fully booked.

✔️ Carry enough cash in pesos. Most places in Tulum don’t accept credit cards, and if you try to use USD/GBP/EUR/etc., you’ll end up paying 2-3 times more for your meal because of the unfair exchange rate. (hotels accept credit cards except for Posada Margherita)

✔️ Tulum has become a hotspot for kitesurfers. The kitesurfing season starts in October and lasts until May. But El Cuyo is more popular for this sport.

Other than this, you can refer to my Mexican travel tips for more practical information.

👉 Do I Need Travel Insurance to Travel to Mexico?

I would do it if I were you. You never know what can happen and know that no matter what, you will be covered with any expenses will give you peace of mind, and make your travel worry-free. You can check out SafetyWing which I have used and find it affordable and comprehensive and also Travel Insurance Master which is great because you can insert all your information and what kind of insurance you need and their system will pull out the best insurance for your need.

🚰 Can I Drink Tap Water in Mexico?

No, you can’t! Maybe in some areas or in some homes where they have installed water filters but to be on the safe side, I would say, never drink tap water in Mexico. Carry a water bottle with you and fill it up where you find available potable water sources. Most of the hotels have those.

🚗 Is It Safe to Drive in Mexico?

The short answer is: depending on where you are. Although in general if you stick to the main roads and don’t drive at night you should probably be safe. In lesser tourist areas you should probably check the local news to stay up to date. Driving in the Yucatan Peninsula is easy everywhere, even at night, although I would still avoid it. I recommend Discover Cars because the site offers the option to compare prices among different car rentals and you can add their own full coverage.

Read more on my guide on Renting a car in Mexico.

📱 Will My Phone Work in Mexico?

It will probably work, especially if you have a European or US phone, but your roaming rates may be to the stars (check with your SIM provider). Even if have an affordable international rate, you will be much better off by buying a Mexican SIM Card. It’s cheap, easy to set up, and it will keep you connected with your friends, family, and, more important, google Maps so you will never get lost!

🤕 Is It Safe to Travel to Mexico Right Now?

The short answer is, yes it is. However, there are parts of Mexico that are indeed troubled and you should avoid for now, and others that are super safe and easy to travel around.

Regardless of where you are you should always use some common sense rules such as, never flaunting expensive clothing, accessories, electronics, or money and keeping a low profile.

💉 Do I Need Any Vaccine to Travel to Mexico?

No, there is no vaccine requirement (of any kind) to travel to Mexico

🇲🇽 Do I Need a Visa to Travel to Mexico?

If you are coming from the US or Europe you don’t need a VISA to enter Mexico. Once you get in you need to fill out a form that you need to keep with you until you leave. If you don’t have it you will pay a fine.

Although the tourist visa for US and European travelers used to be 6 months long which you could easily renew by leaving the country for a couple of days and going back, nowadays they have been stricter. You may be asked how you would sustain your living and other similar questions. Sometimes they even ask you to show your credit cards.

It seems odd but they can do that. If you intend to stay longer than a usual couple of weeks’ vacation time, just be honest and explain your plans. If you are not from the US, check this site to see if you need a visa

💸 Where Do I Find the Best Travel Deals for Mexico? 💸

A trip to Mexico can be expensive if you love to travel with all the comforts (like I do). There are a few tricks that will help you find the best deals. Here are my tips:

👉 DON’T travel in the high season, which is Holy week, Christmas and winter in general, and August.
👉 Book months in advance to find early booking discounts
👉 Use aggregators such as Discover Cars to find price comparisons and VRBO for vacation rentals!
👉 Look for packages flights+hotels on Expedia.
👉 Check on Booking.com or Hotels.com for hotel deals

Happy travels!!
